Equality & Equity
Our society continues to take steps towards equality, but being equal and fair is not always straightforward. Sometimes, people may need different treatment to access the same opportunities. This is called equity. Does equity mean we need to treat people differently in order to gain equality? If so, how can we do this without undermining equality? Before the controversial nature of these questions takes hold, we just like to clarify that equality and equity promote fairness in two very different ways.
Equality involves treating everyone the same—providing access to the same opportunities—regardless of an individual’s background or circumstance. In this way, equality may not always be fair treatment.
Equity, on the other hand, means treating a person’s situation as unique and helping them accordingly based on their individual need. Equity does not necessarily imply providing someone else with less; rather, it is providing extra help to those who need more. Therefore, equity plays a key role in ensuring equality.
